The Best Companions in Avowed: Every Companion Ranked

Avowed Companion Party Select

Avowed is the latest first-person RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, and much like in The Outer Worlds, this fantasy adventure lets you pick up a few companions to join in the journey. Playing as a royal envoy with special, god-like powers, it’s your job to roam the Living Lands and cure a mysterious “Dreamscourge” plaguing its inhabitants. You can have up to two companions with you at any given time, and depending on your choices, your quest can be made much more enjoyable. Luckily, we’ve got a ranked list of the best companions in Avowed, in order to help you make the right decision.

Avowed Key Art

So, who’s the best companion in Avowed? Honestly, any of the four party members are serviceable, but there are definitely a couple that are far more powerful (and personable) than the others. Whether you’re looking for maximum damage during combat, better survivability, or helpful advice, make sure you pick the best companions in Avowed for the job. Ranked from worst to best, these are the best Avowed companions.

The Best Companions in Avowed

4. Marius

None of the companions in Avowed are outright bad, but for what it’s worth, Marius is definitely my least favorite. A vertically challenged ranger whose strength lies in ranged combat, he’s the second companion you’ll find in your adventure, toward the tail end of your time in Dawnshore.

Marius Avowed Companion

Marius is useful early on, thanks to his light crowd control abilities and decent damage, but you’ll likely want to replace him as soon as possible. Plain and simple, Marius is a jerk, and not even the slightly funny, endearing kind. Most of the time, he’d rather neg you than offer decent advice, and he can’t help but complain every step of the way.

3. Yatzli

Tiny but packing a magical punch, Yatzli is a sorceress with tons of damage-dealing potential, making her one of the best companions in Avowed for assistance in combat. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a while before you can choose her, as Yatzli is the last companion you’ll meet.

Yatzli Companion Avowed

Once she’s available, she’s a great default pick for bonus damage, thanks to her Essence Explosion and Minoletta’s Missile Battery spells. Both provide ample area-of-effect coverage, pummeling opponents into oblivion. Yatzli is also good to have in your party for end-game areas, as she can dispel environmental illusions, something that no other party member can. Pound for pound, Yatzli is a fantastic damage dealer and absolutely one of the best companions in Avowed.

2. Giatta

Most of the best Avowed companions bolster your strength, but Giatta is a spellcaster who instead focuses on healing and buffing your party, adding a much-needed boost in survivability. You can find Giatta in the second main zone, the Emerald Stair, but you’ll need to make some progress in the main quest first.

Giatta Avowed Companion

Not only can Giatta hold her own in battle, but thanks to her Barrier shield spell and constant healing abilities, you can get more aggressive than usual. She’s also an overall great character with some insightful opinions, always willing to lend an ear and provide good advice. Considering how hectic combat is and how limited health potions are, Giatta is an essential party member, unless you’ve already got healing covered. Even still, it’s hard to fail with Giatta at your side.

1. Kai

Kai is by far the best companion in Avowed, so it’s a good thing he’s the first one you meet. A war-torn soldier who has left his post and joins your crew in search of fresh adventure, Kai is both useful in combat and invaluable as a pal.

Avowed Kai Companion

In battle, Kai can mostly be left to his own devices, thanks to his Second Wind passive ability, which revives from death once per cooldown. He’s also a good distraction, taunting enemies and dealing significant stun damage with his Leap of Daring ability. Most importantly though, Kai is easily the most loyal party member of them all. Most of the time, he trusts your decisions, but isn’t afraid to speak his mind when it counts. Truthfully, both Yatzli and Giatta could’ve occupied this top spot, as all three characters are powerful in their own right, but Kai was the one I felt the most connected to. Regardless, it’s hard to find a better right-hand man than Kai, making him an easy pick for the best companion in Avowed.
